Gas analysis. - In apparatus for detecting injurious gases in mines and other places, and working on the diffusion principle, the indicating U-tube is of such small section and the liquid is of such small mass that it can only be moved out of position very slowly by shaking, and the indicating-tube is placed in the path of the rays of light from the miner's lamp on which the device is carried, and is arranged so that an increase in pressure of the liquid in the diffusion chamber causes a bubbling of gas through the liquid. In the apparatus shown, the diffusion chamber 5 is arranged above the lamp 2, and the indicating-tube 6 is arranged at the side of the lamp. To insure that no liquid shall escape from the tube, liquid traps consisting of tubes 9, 10 are provided. A valve 11 enables the pressures inside and outside the diffusion chamber to be equalized.
