Abstract
9445. Burton, J. R. April 16. Ornamenting.-Relates to inlaying processes in which both the inlay and the background are cut by pressure from projecting knife-edges, and consists in pressing the knives through from the back of the material, so that the slightly bevelled edge formed by the knives does not appear on the finished surface. The material a, Fig. 2, is placed with its back face on a knife b supported on a table, and is then pressed on to the knife until the cutting-edges just penetrate to the front face, as shown in Fig. 2. In an alternative method, the inlay and the background are cut by separate knives, one face of each being vertical, so that a close fit is obtained both at the back and front.
