Abstract

9281. Popkess, M.A. April 14. Cauldrons.-Relates to apparatus for heating, drying, and pulverizing earthy substances, such as soil, loam, clay, or peat, for the purpose of making paving-material, and consists in providing an external drum having internal rotary means for raising the material on to an internally heated and rapidly rotating pulverizing-drum, the fine dust being separated out as fast as it is formed by means of a screen arranged between the two drums. Fig. 1 shows the rear portion of the apparatus in sectional side elevation, and Fig. 2 shows a plan of the front portion. The earthy material is brought to a hopper 50 by means of an elevator 52, and thence passes into a rotary cylindrical measure 55, shown in Fig. 5, through an aperture which at definite intervals discharges the material on to a worm conveyer 57, from which it passes to shelves 13 fixed to the interior of a slowly rotating drum 3. The material then passes into a pulverizing - chamber arranged between a perforated rapidly-rotating reel 25 and a conical screen 15 attached to the drum 3. The interior of the reel 25 is heated by an oil burner 70, and the material is pulverized by the combined action of the hot gases which pass through holes 27 in the reel, and the impact of helical blades 26 on the outside of the reel. The dust, as it is formed, passes through the conical screen and is conveyed to the rear of the machine by helical blades 16 on the interior of the rotary drum 3. The oil burner 70 projects into the reel 25 through the hollow shaft 30 carrying the reel. The annular spaces 71, 72 admit atmospheric air for combustion, the latter space being controlled by a disk valve 73 which can slide on the shaft 30. The burner is surrounded by a hood 75 reduced in size at its end. The hot gases from the oil burner serve to heat and dry the dust, and for this purpose the gases pass through the centre of the apparatus from front to rear and then return through the annular flue 20 and escape by the chimney 21. The various parts of the apparatus are driven from a motor shaft 8, Fig. 2, which is connected by chain gearing 9 with a countershaft 10 driving the reel-carrying shaft 30 through a chain 79, and the drum 3 at reduced rate through a chain 11, gears 76, 77, pinion 4, and circular rack 5. The measure 55 and conveyer 57 are driven from a countershaft 88 rotated through friction speed - varying gear 60 by a shaft connected by a belt 83 with the shaft 12 carrying the gear-wheel 76. An endless band 82 delivering the material from the machine is driven from a countershaft 78 carrying the gear-wheel 77.
