Abstract

8938. Fralich, J. S. Y. April 8, 1913, [Convention date]. Hand actuation.-In hand-operated brakes for railway cars &c., in which the handle is clutched to the brake staff for the brake-applying movement but is unclutched for the reverse movement, auxiliary means are provided for connecting the handle to the staff for such reverse movement to allow release of the brakes by hand when desired. In the form shown, the handle 10 is pivoted at 9 to a housing 5 which is formed into a cap 8 and mounted to rotate on a fixed bearing 3 of the staff 1, and is connected by a pin 15 and groove 16 to the boss of a ratchet 14 engaging a ratchet 12 on the staff. When it is desired to provide a positive connexion between the handle and staff for releasing the brakes, the driver raises the housing 5 by means of the cap 8 until a notch 20 or 21 in the boss of the ratchet 14 engages a pin 19 on. the staff, thus directly connecting the handle to the staff as shown in Fig. 2. The release movement of the housing 5 is limited by lugs 6, 7. The handle is formed with a cam 11 which disengages the ratchets 12, 14 when the handle is lowered as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
