The operation of the handA brak-e is as tollows, assuming that thev parts are in their normal operative position as shown in Figure 2, .withthe dog tooth v3l coacting with the ratchet teeth 22 and permitting a step- ;by-step winding movement of the' ratchet wheel. In' this position, the pin 39 will 'be closely adjacent'or abut against the shoulder 35 seas ,to enable theY release-handle to `re- .tract the dog from its engagement with the ratchet wheel while permittingthe slight pivoting movement oi the dog necessary tor the step-by-step mov-ement of the ratchet wheel. When it is desired to release the dog' `from its holding engagement with the ratchet wheel, the release handle 38 is pulled horizontally to the position shown in Figure 3, `when the Yflange 4i() is in a position'to be engagedv by the carrier oil itulcruin member as shown. While in this position the force of the spring 37 acts to tend to oscillate the'dog about its pivot 29, this in turn causing the outer side or Vwall of the notch 36 to exertV its thrustV against the. pin 39 along aline well within vthe brakes, will nevertheless be permitted to continue its rotation in an unwinding di# rection when the car gets inmotion and Jarring of the brake chain occurs, to permit the I brake shoes to becomeJ fully Vdisengaged from the wheels and the brake chain'to be fully slack. f
lhen the bralreis later applied to wind the chain, the brakeman elevates the handle 24 and as he oscillatesthe same, the'carrier or fulci'um` member C, by engagement with flange 40, will actuate the releaserhandle 38 to cause the pin 39 to move outof the'notch '36, whereupon the spring 37 will force the dog into its normal operative position to hold the release handle in i-ts normal positionar j v- I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred. manner of carrying out my invention but( the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope or" the claims appended hereto. y I claim:
l.V ln a hand brake for railway cars, the combination with a rotatable ratchet Wheel. adapted to wind a brake chain; .of means for rotating said ratchet Vwheel in a chain-wind ing direction; a locking dog engageable with said ratchet wheel to prevent reverserotavtion thereof; `a release handle engaging said dog to hold the latter retracted :trom the ratchet wheel kwhen sai'dhaiidle is moved to released position; and means whereby said handle is returned to normal position by ao- 'tuation oit said lirst mentioned means.
