CAR-BRAKE.
Specication of Letters Patent. Patented J une 16, 191 4. i
Application filed February 25,1914. Serial No. 820,834.
To allvwhom z'mag'/ concern.'
Be it known that I, HOWARD STILLMAN, of Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented ya certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Brakes, 'of which improvement the following is a specification. My present invention particularly relates to means for manually7 effecting the application of brakes on railroad cars, and is an improvement on that for which Letters Patent of the United States No.A 1,034,659, were granted and issued tot mevv under date of. August 6, 1912.
The object of my invention is to provide an appliance in the operation of which the usefulresults' of that set forth in my Letters Patent No. 1,034,659 aforesaid, may be fully attained, with a simplification of mechanism and a resultant reduction ofthe cost of construction and maintenance.
The improvement claimed `is hereinafter fully set forth. L
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is'a view, in elevation, of the blind end of a mail or baggage car, illustrating an application of my invention; Fig. 2, a horizon tallsection through the same; Fig. 3, 'a frontx view, /on an enlar ed scale, of the ratchet mechanism; and, 4ig. 4f, a longitudinal central section, on a similar scale, through the supports of the ratchet mechanism, with the latter in elevation.y
My invention is`herein, asin Letters Patent No. 1,034,659 aforesaid, exemplified in connection with the ordinary means of man' ually applying-brakes in the inside of a ,car body, 1, atthe blind or non-vestibuled end thereof, the same consisting of a handJwhe'el, 2, indicated i'n'dotted lines in Fig. l, having its shaft, which isl journaled on a suitable member of the car frame, connected to a l brake chain, 3, Which is Wound on the shaft by the rotation of the hand Wheel, and passes therefrom, around sheaves, 4 and', to the brakerigging, which may be of any of the vvell lmown forms, and, as it does not, in and of itself, form any part of my present invention, is not shown.
'In the practice of my invention, for the purpose of enabling the brakes to be applled and released, when required, from the ontside of the car, While the latter is in motion, lI provide a horizontal brake chain shaft. 6.Y
.the inner end of Which is journaled in a bearing 6, adjacent to the end of the car at which the shaft of the usual hand Wheel, 2,' is mounted, and which projects outwardly through the end of the car. The outer-bean ing,l of the brake cha-in shaft, is formed, on an integral bearing and stop plate, 60. which is riveted or bolted to one of the end plates of the car body, 1, and its inner bearing, 6, is cast on a standard secured to the under frame of the car, and the brake chain shaft is connected to a brake chain, 7 which, and which 1n its rotation, is Wound upon it,
passes around sheaves, 8 and 9, to the brake rigging, in the same manner as the "brake chain of the usual hand Wheel. y
A combined operating and locking ratchet, 6, is fixed upon the brake chain shaft', 6, on the outside of thecar and ladjacent to the outer bearing, 60a, of the shaft, which is turned in direction to Wind the brake chain upon it and set the brake, by a ratchet lever,A
10, journaled on its outer end, said'lever carrying an operating paWl, 10a, which oscillates upon a pin on the ratchet lever, and is normally engagedl with the teeth ofthe ratchet, 6, by a spring, 10b. A lateral releasing dogl or projection, 10, formed on the paWl, 1'V is adapted to abut against a stop, 60, formed integral with the bearing a'nd stop plate, 69, When the ratchet lever is moved into the position shown in the drawings, in which position it abuts against a lever stop, l2, Xed to the car end, the pawl, 10, beingv thereby disengaged from the teethof the ratchet, 6a.
. A stud, 13, is fixed in a sleeve, 60d, on the bearing ,and stop plate, 60, and a double armed locking and releasing lever, 13e, 13d, is pivoted on said stub. The lower arm, 13, of the lever, is weighted on its outer end, sufficiently to normally maintain a locking pawl, 13b, which is .formed or fixed on its upper arm, inengagement with the teeth of the ratchet, 6, and thereby to lock the latter, that is, to prevent its rotation .with the brake chain shaft, 6, on which it is fixed, in
direction opposite to that imparted by the' movement of the ratchet lever, 10, away from the lever stop, 12. The upperA arm,v 13", of the rocking and release lever, projects bcyond the pawl, 13", and is curved toward the ratchet lever, 10, and made of such lengthas to be contacted with and moved by said lever, when the latteriis'brought'up to.
or near the stop, 12, and thereby to release the locking pawl, 13b, from the ratchet, 6.v
In the operation of the appliance, -the Y, accomplished by my present construction with the elimination of the long pawl shaft,
. terially greater length than is obtainable in 'the comparatively thin plate metal of-the Vmechanism of Patent No. 1,034,659 aforelfurther advantage attained by my present `cure by Letters Patent:
brakes are set and released by a brakeman riding on the `side step, 14, of the car, in a similar manner to the operation of the brake said, and it will be seenl that this result is 13, its inner bearing, 13, and the independent locking ratchet, 6", of said patent. A,
construction is the provision of an outer bearing for the brake lchain shaft of macar, and the formation of said bearing, the support for 'the locking and release lever, and the releasing stop for the pawl of the ratchet lever, in an integral casting.
I claim as my invention and desire to se- 1. The combination, with a railroad car, of a brakevchain shaft, a brake chain eX- tending therefrom to a connection with the brake rigging of the car, an integral bearing and stop plate secured to an end of the car y body, a ratchet xed on -thebrake chain `sha`ft,'a ratchet lever journaled on said shaft outside the car body, a pawl coupled to said lever and adapted to engage the ratchet, areleasing dog on said pawl adapted to abut against a stop on the bearing and stop plate a double armed locking and. release lever journaled on the bearing and stop plate adjacent to the brake chain shaft, and a pa'wl on said lever adapted to engage the ratchet in opposite direction to the pawl of the ratchet lever.
2. The combination, with a railroad car, of a brake chain shaft, a brake chain extend ing therefrom to a connection with the brake rigging of the car, an integral bearinfr and stop plate secured to an end of the cartbody', a ratchet fixedl on the brake chain shaft, a ratchet'lever journaled on said shaft outside the car body., a pawl coupled to said lever and adapted to engage the ratchet, a releasing dog on said paWl adapted to abut against a stop on the bearing and stop plate and a double armed locking and release le* ver journaled on the bearing and stop plate adjacent to the brake chain shaft, said lev'er carrying a pawl adapted to engage the ratchet in opposite direction to the paWl of.
the ratchet lever and having one of its arms iii-position to Contact with said lever at one extremity of the traverse thereof.
3. In a car brake, the combination of a bearing and stop plate having integral therewith a bearing for a brake chain shaft, a pavvl releasing stop, anda support for a locking and release lever; a brake chain shaft journaled in the bearing, and a locking and release lever pivoted on the lever support o f the bearing and sto plate.
