8837. Yocum, J. H. April 17, 1913, [Convention date]. Treatment preliminary to tanning. - Fresh hides are preserved prior to tanning by being salted with a mixture of a neutral salt of sodium and a small percentage of normal sulphite of sodium or a similar base, such as potassium or ammonium. The mixture is sprinkled on the hides in the usual manner and has the effect of eliminating salt stains in the tanned product. The preferrecl mixture contains 97 per cent of common salt and 3 per cent of sodium sulphite. The chloride may, however, be replaced by sulphate or other neutral salts of sodium.
