Abstract
7577. Griffiths, W. March 25. Making and finishing paving-blocks.-A roadpaving block consists of irregular stone fragments united along the lines of contact by Portland cement in a mould to form a rigid framework and then immersed in a heated condition in molten pitch or the like sufficiently long for the molten pitch to penetrate into the interspaces between the fragments, these interspaces communicating with each other and with the outer faces of the block. The rigid framework is formed by mixing the stone fragments with dry cement powder and, as the fragments pass from the mixer to the mould, wetting the powder remaining in contact with them by a fine spray of water. After the material have set sufficiently to bear removal from the mould, the framework is immersed for some days in water to which has preferably been added sodium silicate.
