6591. Harris, W. A. March 16. Jigs.-In an arrangement of jigs for treating coal, ores, &c., water is supplied intermittently to a series of compartments through pipes the outlet ends of which are directed vertically downwards, adjacent compartments being successivelysupplied. Water is admitted to a pipe F arranged above or below the bed A and is distributed by revolving or reciprocating valves G to pipes C directed downwards, or in some cases both downwards and upwards, into the compartments I, an air vessel N being placed on the pipe F beyond the last valve G. When reciprocating valves are used, they may be driven automatically by the pressure of the water supplied. Means may be provided for adjusting the reciprocating valves with respect to the length of time during which they are open per revolution of the driving-shaft. The water supply described may be combined with jigs having plungers or reciprocating screens, the pulsations being timed to assist or reduce one another as desired, and in the case of plunger jigs, closed air chambers may be placed over the plunger compartments.
