Abstract
6222. Highfield, F. W. Sept. 11. Gases, treating electrically.-In apparatus for electrical precipitation of zinc-oxide fumes and like suspended matter in gases, the discharging- electrode is arranged out of the direct path between the inlet and outlet of the apparatus, so that the deposition of dust on the electrode and its insulator and consequent impaired working of the apparatus is avoided. In the apparatus shown, the gas is introduced through a pipe E<2> Fig. 1, into the bottom of a cylindrical chamber A, the lower part of which forms the collecting - electrode, and the gases escape through holes A<5> also arranged in the lower part of the apparatus. The upper part of the chamber A is of insulating material and carries the discharging-electrode D formed as a cagelike structure of interlaced wires D', Fig. 2, overwound with asbestos string. The electrode D is supplied with unidirectional current through one or more spark gaps K, other spark gaps K<1> being provided to maintain a constant difference of potential between the electrodes. The separated particles collect on a grid G in the lower part of the chamber, and a rotary motion is given to this grid to cause the particles to pass through it and to be afterwards carried-away by a conveyer J.
