Abstract

6146. Mitchell, R. G. March 11. L e a f holders and turners; book &c. rests. -A leaf-turner, having a number of leaf-turning arms operated in succession by pneumatic means, is provided with a rotatable member which engages the arms in succession and is operated by compressed air to turn them and is returned by suction, the compression and suction being produced by a foot or other pump and acting on a piston or the like geared to the rotatable operating- member. The book-rest is provided with an adjustable central bookretaining rod, and with an adjustable and removable book-supporting ledge. The rotatable member 14, that operates the turning- arms 12, is shaped as shown to engage these arms which it releases in succession from their pivoted catches 17 by a pin 19. A pin 38 is provided for lifting the member 14 when it is desired to return the arms 12 into engagement with their catches 17. The spindle 9 has a squared part on which the member 14 slides and is connected through gearing 8, 6, 5 to a piston 4 operated by compressed air and suction in its cylinder 3, which communicates through tubes 23, 25 with the pump cylinder 29, Fig. 10. The cylinder 29 has air-holes 30, and its piston 32 is operated by a spring-raised hinged member 27. The leaf-turner support 1 is connected by sockets to pins 42 on a bar 41 attached to the piano and the book rest is secured to it by a clamping-screw engaging a rod 43, Fig. 13, passed through holes 44, Fig. 6, in the support 1. The music or other book is held on the rest by a rod or wire 48, Fig. 13, pivoted to a spring-pressed collar 49 and at its lower end adapted to be clamped between a spring-pressed toothed member 47, Fig. 12, and a fixed toothed member on the book ledge 46. To enable the rest to be used with small books a removable ledge 58, Fig. 15, is provided with hooks 57 to engage a cross-bar 54 having pins 55 to engage holes in the upright members of the book-rest.
