Abstract
5821. Davis, H. L. Sept. 7. Setting buttons ; setting - mechanism. -Relates to appa ratus for setting buttons comprising a penetrable button body and a pronged fastener in which the button is held and centred by a device having a series of spring- influenced fingers, and consists in providing a buttonholding and centring - device in which the fingers are expanded automatically to release the button during the setting operation. The buttonholder 6, Fig. 1, is carried by a plunger 10 sliding through an arm 3 and operated by a lever 9 connected by a link 11 to a foot treadle, adjustable stops 14, 15 limiting the movement of the lever 9. The button-holder comprises a number of flexible fingers 28 depending from a ring 27 which is attached by a pin-and-slot connexion to a removable hammer head 24 on the end of the plunger 10, the end of the hammer 24 being shaped to fit the button. The ends of the fingers are set inwardly as shown in Fig. 9 and provided with buttonholding shoulders 29. In operation, the plunger 10 with a button held by the fingers 28 moves down over a pronged fastener 7, Fig. 6, carried by a fastener holder located in a housing 16 at the end of the base-plate 1 of the machine, the holder comprising an anvil 19 and spring-pressed sleeve 17. During setting, the button-holder 6 is retarded by the material and the hammer 24 moving downwardly spreads the fingers 28 to free the button. The holder 6 is returned to position by a leaf spring attached to the arms 3 acting as a stop. The base 1 of the machine has stub legs so that it may accommodate cylindrical portions of garments such as sleeves, or a special knee-shaped bracket 34, Fig. 10, having an antifriction roller 35 may be provided for sleeves &c. For attaching buttons to head coverings, particularly caps, a partspherical member 37, Fig. 11, having a projection 38 to fit in the housing 16 is provided, the member 37 carrying the holder for the button-fasteners.
