Abstract
4454. Booth, H. C. Feb. 20. Pneumatic conveyers and elevators.-An apparatus for removing dust &c. from destructor and other furnaces and for similar purposes such as emptying grain-bins, comprises, in combination, a vacuum pump 4, an air-filter 6, a dust-collector 7, an air-tight conduit 8, adjustable suction gates admitting the dust &c. to the conduit, and an air-inlet valve in the conduit opposite each suction gate. Each suction gate is fitted at the base of a hopper-like opening 9, Fig. 3, a number of which are formed in the floor of the flue &c., and it consists of a plate 13, Fig. 4, sliding in a slot at the base of a neck 15 connecting the hopper with the conduit. Each air-inlet 17 is controlled by a valve consisting of a plate 18 pivoted on a stud and wing-nut 19 and engaging a second stud and wing-nut by means of a slot 22. The pump must he capable of maintaining a minimum vacuum of five pounds per square inch in the collector 7.
