3301. Reimers, W. Feb. 25, 1913, [Convention date]. Expanding pulleys .-Relates to expanding pulleys in which the rim consists of spirallywound spring strips expanded by a device at the centre of the pulley. Three spring strips 1, 2, 3 are guided between side walls 4, 5 connected to the hub 6. The side walls have slots 7, radial or approximately so, serving as guides for bridge members a<1>, a<2>, a<3>, to which are fastened the outer ends of the spring strips. Spindles bare journaled in the bridge members and carry spur-wheels c<1>, c<2> intermeshing with racks d<1>, d<2> fastened on the walls 4, 5. Each shaft b has also a worm-wheel e on it engaging with a worm f suitably journaled on the wall 5 and rotated in one or the other direction by bevel-gears 8, 9 from the brake pulleys g<1>, g<2>. The inner ends of the spring strips are fastened to semicircular parts i<1>, i<2>, i<3>, toothed on their concave faces to engage with gears h on the shafts b and moving in guides in the bridge members. Thus, by the rotation of the shafts b, the outer ends of the spring strips are moved radially, while the inner ends are wound spirally. In a modification, the bridge members are carried by hubs which are guided in the arms of a cross-shaped central member. To the hubs are pivoted segments for engaging the inner ends of the strips, while the hubs themselves are engaged by radial screws operated, from the drums g<1>, g<2>.
