EXPANSIBLE PULLEY.

Be it known that I, WILHELM REIMnns, subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Klinke 79, Kiel, in the Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Expansible Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in expanding pulleys formed of one ormore superimposed spirally wound spring-strips held in the form of a closed rim and capable of being expanded at will by a centering device.
Theimprovements consist in new and improved means for expanding and contracting the outer diameter of the pulley face formed by the spring strips.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of one form of construction of the improved pulley. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rim of the pulley consists of three springstrips 1, 2, 3 arranged and guided between the side-walls 4c and 5 of the pulley which are connected by the hub 6 on the shaft. The side- walls 4 and 5 have slots 7 which serve as guides for bridge members a a a On each of these members are fastened transversally one end (which may be named outer end) of each of the springstrips. The outer ends of the strips 3, 2 and l are fastened on the members al a and a respectively. In the bridge-members are journaled shafts b carrying at their ends spur wheels 0 and c intermeshing with the racks al (Z fastened on either walls 4 and 5. On each shaft 1) is moreover keyed a wormgear 6 intermeshing with the worm-shafts f suitably journaled on the wall 5 and rotated in one or the other direction by bevelgears 8 and 9 from the brake-pulleys g and g respectively. I claim In an expansible pulley of the character described, the combination of an expansible rim, consisting of spring-strips, members to which the outer ends of said strips are secured, side walls for the pulley provided with slots for guiding said members, a hub to which said side walls are secured, shafts journaled in said members, spur-Wheels at the ends of said shafts, racks secured to both of said side walls intermeshing with said spur-wheels, a worm gear keyed to each of said shafts, worm-shafts journaled in one of the said side walls, means for rotating said worm shafts in both directions for drawing the ends of the strips into the slots of said side walls, segments moving in guides formed upon said members to which the inner ends of said strips are secured, provided at their concave faces with teeth, and gears on the shafts journaled in said members, meshing with said teeth, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
