Abstract

1504. Ito, K. Jan. 20. Indicators for position of engine valve-gear. -The reversing-gear of a marine or other engine is controlled alternatively from the engine-room or from the bridge or other position. In some cases, the stop valve and throttle valve are controlled in the same manner. In the arrangement shown in Fig 1, an electric motor 19 controlled from the bridge drives a spindle 13 through wheel and worm gear 18, 17, and bevel-gear 15, 14. The spindle 13 has a thread which gears with a worm-wheel 9 loosely mounted on a spindle 6. This spindle has a thread 5 gearing with a worm-wheel 4 connected by a rod 20 with an arm 21 on the weigh-shaft 22 which operates the reversing- gear. The wheel 9 is put into gear with the shaft 6 by tightening a nut 10, which causes the hub of the wheel 9 to grip a conical collar on the shaft 6. When the wheel 9 is disengaged from the shaft 6, the shaft may be driven by a hand-wheel 11 or by a reversing- engine. The apparatus for signalling the position of the weigh-shaft to the bridge comprises a volt-meter 31, Fig. 4, the terminals of which are connected to one of two terminals 29, and to a movable contact-piece 26. This contact-piece, which moves over a platinum bridge 28 connecting the two terminals 29, is mounted on an arm carried by a spindle secured to the end of the weigh-shaft. The terminals 29 are connected to the mains H, G, and, by means of a two-way switch S, the voltmeter may be put across the terminals 29, or between one terminal 29 and the contact-piece 26 as shown.
