Abstract
464. Hochstetter, H. von. Jan. 7., Formaldehyde is prepared by passing a mixture of methyl alcohol vapour and air or oxygen over a catalyst consisting of a suitable metal couple; any couple in which the catalytic action of the principal metal is increased by the auxiliary metal may be used, for example copper and platinum, or silver and platinum, rhodium, or other metal of the platinum group. The two metals should be in intimate contact but not alloyed; this may be effected by precipitating an inadherent coating of the auxiliary metal on the principal metal. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 402/87, 17,177/96, 30,036/97, and 19,569/00.
