Description
д. Авторами насто щего изобретени разработан способ предохранени металлов в дисперсном состо нии от окислени .In a number of industries one has to deal with metals that are in a finely dispersed state. Dispersed metals, as is well known, often impose pyrophoric properties, which greatly complicates their use. Such difficulties, in particular, are encountered in the preparation of an active iron mass for alkaline batteries, in the preparation of iron catalysates for ammonia synthesis, in the production of hard alloys, etc.
The method is as follows: after reduction in hydrogen or another gas, the iron or another metal is immersed in an organic solvent (benzene, gasoline), then the metal is filtered and dried at room temperature. The metal thus obtained does not possess pyrophoric properties and may not be in contact with air for several months. Experiments have shown that instead of immersing iron in an organic solvent, to protect iron from oxidation, benzene or gasoline vapor can be passed over its surface.
The potential of an iron electrode obtained from iron, on the surface of which benzene is adsorbed, corresponds to the potential of the iron electrode of an alkaline battery in a charged state. This circumstance suggests that the adsorbed benzene prevents iron from forming an oxide film on its surface.

1. A method of preventing the oxidation of metals in a dispersed state, obtained by reduction of oxides with hydrogen, characterized in that the metal after reduction is immersed in an organic solvent (benzene, gasoline), after which it is filtered and dried at room temperature.
Modification of the method of claim 1, wherein the solvent vapor is passed over the surface of the dispersed metal.
