Abstract
105. Thackeray, F. Jan. 2. Columns; reinforced-concrete columns.-Concrete columns are formed with an inner shaft of curved slabs A surrounded by plain or reinforced concrete cast between the slabs A and cylindrical or polygonal outer temporary centring or permanent slabs E. The slabs A are bound at intervals with wire and may be made of plain or reinforced concrete, terra-cotta, earthenware, asphalt, plaster, &c. The inner shaft may be left hollow for use as a smoke or other flue or for pipes, wires, &c., or it may be filled with plain or reinforced concrete which may be loaded before the outer portion has set. The main bars F may be held in position by means of spacers G, Fig. 3, and wire H; rings L, Fig. 7, and wire binding K; notched rings P, Fig. 9,. and spacers N; a wheel-shaped grid; spring wire clips partly encircling the inner shaft and with a radiating stem; or wire bindings W, Fig. 15, with or without struts Z.
