18. Bell, A. C. B. Jan. 1. Balls. - The core of a golf ball consists of printer's - roller composition, for example of glycerine, sugar, and glue or gelatine, to which may be added a small percentage of starch, and the core is pierced with holes and immersed in a solution of formaldehyde. Heat is applied, and the core is afterwards washed, the ball being completed by the application of rubber windings and the usual outer cover of gutta-percha, balata, &c. The weight of the ball may be reduced by mixing ground cork with the ingredients of the core, or may be increased by an admixture of metallic oxides, sulphates, or other salts.
