Work-holders.-A device for holding or supporting several articles of irregular form is provided with two series of movable bodies b<2>, b<3>, one series b<3> being in contact with the tool base a and capable of a longitudinal movement with respect to it, and the other series b<2> being in contact with or supported from the first series at a distance from the base and capable of a longitudinal and a transverse movement with respect to it. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the device is formed of a chain of links b, one alternate series of pivots b<3> being guided in grooves a<3> in the base-plate and the other alternate series of pivots b<2> being employed to connect together the work-engaging ends of the chain links. The work-engaging ends of the links may be extended beyond the pivots to engage the work at two points, as shown in Fig. 3, or may be provided with pivoted blocks or pads c, Fig. 5, or with rollers. In a further modification, the rollers are in contact with each other and are linked together and to the base by side links. In the modification shown in Fig. 11, the device is formed of two series of wedge-like blocks F, F<1>, the blocks F' sliding in contact with a flat surface a<4> and the work-engaging blocks F engaging the inclined sides of the blocks F<1>. Wires F<3> retain the block F in position.
