Abstract

27,574. Archibald, H. M. Dec. 1. Building-blocks, special shapes of.-Building- blocks for walls consisting of inner and outer slabs 6, 10 connected by strips 3 are made by placing the connecting strips on end in a mould frame 2 arranged on a smoothed surface table 1, pouring a plastic material into the mouldframe to form the inner slab 6, inverting the slab when set and placing it so that the other ends of the connecting strips rest in the mould frame, and finally, casting the outer slab 10 around them. The inverted slab may be tilted in the production of buttress or other special blocks. The process may be used in the manufacture of three or four sided blocks for supporting joists, the connecting strips running in one or two directions, or joist recesses may be formed in the blocks by means of core pieces in the mould frame 2. The mould frame may be recessed and beaded for the formation of beads and recesses on the edge of the blocks. The wall composed of the blocks is preferably stiffened, either by filling with concrete and reinforcing with metal rods arranged between the slabs 6, 10, or by metal rods passing through holes in the outer slabs formed by core rods carried by the mould frame 2, the spaces around the metal rods being afterwards filled with cement grouting. The blocks may in some cases be reinforced both vertically and horizontally. The connecting-pieces 3 may be of brick, stone, concrete, with or without a metal core, or other suitable material, and if of light structure may be pushed into the plastic material after casting the slab 6. The surface of the slab 6 may be formed by tiles, embossed paper, glass, &c. placed in the mould-frame before the slab is cast.
