Punching; metal-sheet feeds. - In a machine for stamping out articles from a metal strip, the strip is fed by a continuous friction feed, but is held for the die to operate by a spring- mounted finger engaging the hole in the waste strip left by the article just stamped out, or engaging recesses in a bar attached to the work. The strip 10, Figs. 1 and 2, is fed by rollers 14, or by winding the waste strip on a drum 9 driven by a belt 30. The finger 15 adjustably secitred to the rod 18 is raised, against the action of a spring 24, by a projection 22 engaging an arm 23 of the rod 18 when the crank - operated die 2 descends to stamp out an article. As the die rises, the finger 15 falls and, as the strip advances, engages the hole just made; the finger 15 is then carried to the right against the action of the spring 26 and brings the strip to rest when the arm 23 engages the bracket 19. The descending die 2 engages the strip 10 just before the finger is raised, and this is at once moved to the left by the spring 26 so that it cannot re-engage the same hole. In the case of short strips, a selector 40, Figs. 7 and 9, engages the strip before passing the die and, when the end of the strip is reached, falls down behind the strip, rotating the sleeve 45 and actuating there by the link-work 58, 59, 57 to move a gag 55, Fig. 8, between the projection 22 and the arm 23, which causes the finger 15 to rise and the strip 10 to be entirely withdrawn before the die 2 can act on it, thus preventing the formation of an imperfect article. The selector is raised to allow the introduction of a fresh strip by an arm 48 on an extension of the rod 18. When operating on sheets, the finger 15 may engage recesses in a spacing-bar connected to or moved with the sheet, which may be moved laterally in order to stamp out successive rows of articles.
