Sliding-jaw wrenches. -In wrenches in which the movable jaw is locked by wedge action on the shank, a roller 17 engages between the movable jaw 12 and the inclined surface of the wedge-key 16 engaging the shank 10. A spring 18 between the roller 17 and the projection 16<b> of the wedge causes the roller to exert a clutching action between the jaw and the wedge. The fixed jaw 11 and the jaw 12 are inclined so that the nut a engaged between them is at an angle to the shank, and does not exert pressure on the movable jaw close up to the shank.
