Be it known that I, DAXmL' C. Gaovrs, citizen of the United States, residing at Brockwayville, in the county of Jefi'erson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new-andyuseful Im rovements in:
Wrenches; and I dodeclare t e following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in kindwhichwill the art to which I it appertains-to make and usethe'samev invention relates to wrenches, and

How ably mounted upon the shank is a movable jaw 3 which is provided at its upper end with a cham r 4 within which is seated a locking membci G preferably in the form of a wedge. The member 5 is adapted to be held in engagement with an inchne member 6'upon the shank 1 by any suit-able mechanism, preferably as a bolt or wing-nut 7. The locking member 5 is held against longitudinal movementwithin the chamber 4 by means of guides or flanges 8 at the opposite ends of the chamber, and if desired a reinforce 9 may be secured across one side of the chambered end of the jaw 3.

The sides of the handle are also preferably provided with the usual plates 11 and the inclined portion 6 is preferably narrower than the main ortion of the shank thereby forminglshoul ers 12 with which the inner ends of the guides 8 are adapted toengage and thereby causes the movable jaw to move easily without danger of binding.

As above described, it will be seen that the movable jaw can be freely. moved longitudinally upon the shank irom one end to the other and fixedly secured thereon at any point by roperly adjusting the-bolt I so as to cause the wedgernember 5 to e age with the inclined face of the wedge modifier 6 and thereby prevent any oss'ible movement of the jaw 3 away from t e fixed j aw until after the bolt- 7 has been loosened. By constructing the parts in this manner, itwill be seen that the adjustment of the wrench to its 1 est dimensions, as for instance, two inc es, can be secured by a movement of the bolt 7 a distance ual to the height of the incline, for instance ess than one-half an inch,
thereby permitting of the adjustment made much quicker than the wrenches in which the movable jaw is actuated by means of a screw-thread.
