Abstract
26,712. Hyde, A. C. Nov. 20. Cementation.-Iron or steel is impregnated with nickel throughout or to any desired extent by causing the nickel to pass into the iron by means of a current of carbonic oxide, water gas, producer gas, coal-gas, hydrogen; or the like, or mixtures thereof, the iron being heated to a suitable temperature below melting. For example, carbonic oxide may be passed over powdered nickel or nickel oxide at a temperature below red heat, and the resulting gas passed into a closed vessel containing the iron and heated to 500-1000‹ C. for two hours; or the iron may be packed in powdered nickel in the vessel, and the carbonic oxide &c. passed therethrough; or the iron may be coated with a paint made of powdered nickel and a binding- agent, and then dried and heated in the carbonic oxide &c.
