Direct-call systems.-In systems in which current is supplied from mains K, M, the transmitting- instruments at one station are supplied with current through an inductance B or B' at the other station. When the key G at a station X is on the calling contact I, current from the main M passes through the inductance B<1> at a station Y over a line L and vibrator F to the main K. The interruptions in this circuit are reproduced in the parallel circuit through the condenser C' and receiver D<1>. An inductance A may be inserted in the positive supply main. The inductances B, B' may be used to operate call signals, such as flags, lamps, or bells, or may be used to operate a contact to bring into circuit the transmitter at the called station. Part of the inductances may be used as energizing-coils for the telephone receivers. The current for each transmitter may be fed through both inductances in parallel, and the inductances may be replaced by repeating-coils. Two or more pairs of stations may be connected on the same pair of mains. Batteries at each station may be used in place of the supply mains.
