Abstract
116,107. Claus, J. H. May 20, 1916 Alternating-cutrent systems.-In a telegraph or telephone system employing alternating current and high-frequency oscillating current eitherseparately or together, the line is charged by a direct-current source through a large inductance. When high-frequency oscillating currents are employed, the system is adapted for multiple transmission by tuning the various transmitters and receivers. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the signalling-currents are supplied by an alternator 5 connected to the line 1 and to the return, which may be earth, through condensers 18, 18; while the line is charged by a battery 4 through an inductance 3. When used as a telephone system, a switch 21 is operated to insert a transmitter 20, while the switch 17 is closed: but when used for telegraphing, the transmitter 20 is switched out and the switch 17 operated intermittently. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the line 1 is charged by a battery 4 through an inductance 3; while the line 1 and the aerial 12 are supplied with high-frequency oscillating current by the alternator 5 and an intermediate circuit containing the capacity 9 and spark-gap 10.
