Crank - actuated pumps; multiple - acting piston pumps; revolving-cylinder pumps; valves and valve seats, arrangement of.-Apparatus applicable as a compressor, pump, blower, exhauster or meter, and intended primarily for use in connexion with refrigerating-machinery, comprises cylinders grouped round a common shaft or the equivalent thereof and controlled by a disk valve between which and the cylinder group there is relative rotary motion. The disk valve or the cylinder group is formed and arranged so as to constitute a balanced valve or a balanced cylinder group responsive to the working fluid pressure to coact efficiently with its companion part. In some cases, the balanced member acts as a safety-valve. In the compressor shown in Fig. 1, the suction and discharge chambers c, b are arranged on opposite sides of the cylinders. The inlet w is controlled by the piston and the discharge u by a disk valve i, the hub of which is concentric with the shaft and is secured thereto by a prolongation of the crank-pin. Partial balancing of the disk is effected by by-passing working fluid under discharge pressure in front of the disk. The discharge port t may be formed to increase progressively or step by step in area as it passes in front of the outlets u. The connecting-rods may move longitudinally on the gudgeons to enable the valve to move off its seat under excessive pressure. The inlet may be controlled by a second disk valve driven from the main shaft. A stuffing-box o is provided in the cover 0 and the tubular projection m on the cylinder casting and contains a lanternbush having communication, such as by way of a groove p, with the suction chamber of the apparatus. The disk valve controls both the admission aud discharge which passes to a central chamber around the crank-pin and from there to the discharge outlet. Segmental annular water spaces connected to a common annulus furnished with an inlet and discharge are provided. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the cylinders 1<b> revolve. The suction and delivery chambers are indicated at 5, 6. The inlet and discharge are controlled by passages formed in an annular partition 8 on the casing. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the disk valve 31 controls a number of parallel cylinders engaging an inclined member 35 on the main shaft. The discharge takes place through passages 33, 34. The pistons 28 are provided with projections 29 which enter the ports 30 and minimize clearance. The meeting face of the disk and seating may be at any suitable angle to the face of the disk, and the meeting face may be in the form of one or more antifriction curves.
