Automatic alarm signals; lamp signals. - Means for giving warning of the presence of dangerous gas in a mine comprises a system of transparent cylinders surrounding a lamp, the outer cylinder 4 having a porous cap 7 through which the air and gases diffuse so as to draw up or depress a coloured or other liquid, which consequently rises within the inner cylinder 3 so as to affect the light emitted by the lamp 1. Alternatively, the liquid may raise a float in front of the lamp. Valves may be provided to retain the liquid in the signalling position when once this has been reached. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) refers also to modifications in which a smaller tubular system of the kind described is mounted in front of the lamp, the rays of which are directed upon it by means of lenses. In order to distinguish light from heavy gases, differently coloured beads may be affected by the movement of the liquid, or two differently coloured liquids may be used. The indicators may be reset by opening the apparatus to the atmosphere or by altering the capacity of the tubes. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
