Take-up motions. - In automatic fringing- motions for producing' fringed fabrics such as towels, the shaft 3 carrying the catch-wheel 4, driven by the usual take - up catch 5, is geared by a chainwheel 8, a chain 9, and a chain - wheel 10 to a countershaft 11. A chain-wheel 23 loosely mounted on the countershaft is constantly rotated by a chain 24 and a chain-wheel 25 on the tappet shaft. When a fringe is to be formed, a clutch-member 15 rotatively secured to a boss fast on the countershaft is caused to slide into engagement with a clutch part 23' on the wheel 23 by a clutch fork 18 on a shaft 19, which is operated by a lever 20 and a connexion 21 to dobby or pattern mechanism. The take-up motion is thus driven at an increased speed. In a modification, a constantly-rotating chain-driven wheel is caused to slide on the countershaft and has a clutch member to engage a clutch member on a chainwheel geared to the catch-wheel shaft.
