Railway locomotives steam; driving-gear of crank type, arrangement of. - Relates to locomotives of the kind in which the boiler is made of shells connected at their inner ends to a common fire-box, the parts of the locomotive being symmetrical about transverse and longitudinal central vertical planes. According to the invention, the motor mechanisms 1, Fig. 1, directly actuate the same set of coupled axles 2, these axles being maintained parallel by horn blocks. An uninterrupted corridor is provided all round the boiler, such corridor being formed by outer walls having doors and windows. The driving- cranks on the outer coupled axles 2 are so arranged that the longitudinally reciprocating masses balance one another. The boiler shells 16 shown in Figs. 5 and 7 are traversed by smoke-tubes 15 ending at the common fire-box 6. The shells 16 also communicate with one or more upper shells 10, 11 which in turn communicate with a chamber 12 situated above the fire-box, so that a continuous steam-chamber and water-level are obtained throughout the whole length of the boiler. Water-tubes 8 depending from the top of the fire-box are secured at their lower ends to chambers 9. The ash-pan, Fig. 8, is made of two or more independent boxes with air-inlet passages and air-regulating doors in the longitudinal and transverse walls. The bottoms of the boxes are provided with ash-discharging doors operated by hand or automatically by the weight of the accumulated ashes.
