Abstract

24,150. Holstrom, C. Oct. 24. Ordnance breech mechanism. - Consists in a primer-injector which is actuated by the movements of the breech-screw in the carrier, so that in the event of the primer not being inserted by the gunner sufficiently to enable it to be acted upon by the usual incline on the lock frame, the injector automatically effects the positioning of the primer. The injector may also be used to eject the fired primer if the usual ejector fails. Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of the lock-mechanism in the closed position, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the position of the parts before the lock-frame has completed its closing movement. The injector E is pivoted at e to a forked member E<1>, rotatably mounted in a bracket A' on the carrier A. A projection c on the box-slide C engages in a recess e<2> in the injector. Normally, the injector is held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by a spring bolt E<2>, which engages in a recess c<2> in the box-slide. When, after the unlocking rotation, the breech-screw is retracted in the carrier prior to swinging aside, the injector is rocked about its pivot e by the projection c, until the bolt E<2> is withdrawn from the recess c<2>. A spring plunger E<1Î> then rocks the forked member E laterally into the operative position, so that, on closing the breech, the injector is caused to insert the new primer. The movement of the lock-frame D to the closed position moves the injector aside again. A lip on the end of the injector acts to eject the spent primer if it is not completely ejected by the extractor.
