Abstract

23,848. Malard, G. Oct. 28, 1912, [Convention date]. Travelling - band type; washing processes. - Raw wool, after it has been soaked and scoured and before it is washed, is fed by an endless apron A to an opener, consisting of blade wheels B, B<1>, which opens, draws, and mills it by continuous strokes, alternately upwards and downwards, transforming it from a thick layer into a uniform thin one, which falls on to a more quickly moving endless apron D, suitably perforated, whereon it is sprinkled with hot liquid, preferably from the first bath of the washing machine, by a sprinkler G; the moistened layer, resting on the apron D, is then pressed by a superposed roller E, the pressure being adjustable by means of weighted levers L, to separate, split, and disaggregate the earth, sand, and dung on the filaments, which substances are mainly removed with the liquid, and flow through the perforations of the apron D into a basin K, wherein any wool filaments carried off are caught upon a perforated false bottom. A carding device J, having laminated leather blades, again opens the wool and facilitates its fall into the first washing bath H. The perforated apron D is of malleable cast iron, perforated or sheet steel. The sprinkler G is fed from the first washing bath H by a suitable pump I. The liquid running from the squeezing rollers E, F is charged with grease, and this is preferably removed before passing to the sewer. The blade wheels B, B<1> are geared together, so that the intermeshing is maintained, and conical pulleys are provided so that their speed can be modified when fine, short wool is treated. The blades are cut with a saw-edge, or are furnished with sufficiently strong needles, spaced apart and alternating, those of one roller with those of the other. These rollers may be in the form of small drums, Fig. 3, provided with three wings disposed in the form of a V, of which the apex points in the direction opposite to that of rotation. Collectors Q are placed on the shaft of the lower squeezing roller F, to prevent dirty liquid from entering the naves thereof.
