Germination, assisting; electric treatment.- Grain and seeds are treated before sowing by immersing them in a solution or suspension of organic or artificial manure, through which a current of electricity is passed. The grain is placed in a tank of wood &c., at the ends of which are electrodes of broken carbon or coke enclosed by a perforated celluloid sheet, the terminals being attached to carbon plates embedded in the broken carbon. A solution of sodium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, nitric acid, &c. is added, the current is passed for several hours, the liquid is drained off, and the grain &c. is spread and turned on a drying-floor. Pneumatic drying-apparatus may be used.
