Abstract
20,736. Neufeldt & Kuhnke. June 26, [Convention date]. Respiration, appliances for promoting.-Apparatus for producing artificial respiration, of the type in which respiration gas is alternately forced into and exhausted from the lungs, is provided with control mechanism directly actuated by a gaseous medium, preferable the respiration gas itself. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a casing 1 enclosing a cylinder 4 fitted with a slide valve 8, which controls the supply of high-pressure respiration gas from the nozzle 2 and pipe 20 to the cylinder, and also controls the supply of respiratory gas to the injector and ejector nozzles 32, 31, which are in communication with the facepiece 37. The valve is operated by a tappet 7 on the piston-rod 5, which engages with tappets 9, 10 on the valve-stem and is provided with ports so arranged that the piston is alternately driven up and down, and at the same time gas is supplied alternately to the exhaust compartment 25 and the supply compartment 26, which are in communication with the nozzles 31, 32 respectively. In the position shown, gas passes from the nozzle 3 through the hollow valve-stem and ports 21, 23 to the chamber 25 and ejector nozzle 31, and this supply of gas is augmented by the motive gas remaining in the cylinder after the down-stroke of the piston. This gas enters the hollow valve-stem through the ports 19, 16. The face-mask 37 is provided with safety-valves 35, 36 to limit the exhaust and pressure effects. Nozzles for connexion to several face-masks are provided on the chambers 25, 26. The duration of the various periods may be varied by regulation of the throttle valve 39 on the supply nozzle 2. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the casing 1 is enclosed within an outer case 40, while the concentric exhaust and supply compartments 49, 50 are supplied through the fixed tube 44 and are arranged to move with the slide valve 8. The injector and ejector nozzles 55, 54 operate within a bowl-shaped casing 59, also arranged to move with the slide valve and the exhaust and supply compartments. The bowl 59 is mounted on a resident plate 43 held within a casing 41. The plate 43 serves to accelerate the movements of the valve and its attached parts and to hold them in the two extreme positions. The tube 42 is in communication with a face-mask similar to that shown in Fig. 1.
