Abstract

Hubs; disk wheels.-A hollow hub a, Fig. 5, with stamped-up spigots e, is formed by pressing or stamping from a sheet-metal plate, or from a tube by turning-in the ends, or from two stampings welded together, Fig. 6, the parts embodying half of each spigot, or each having complete spigots arranged in staggered relation. The hub is closed by turning-in and connecting the sides or by inserting a tube. The spokes f, Fig. 1, are fitted over or into the spigots e, and the rim i is laid around their outer ends and connected thereto by pressing spigots j from the metal of the rim into them; or the order of these processes may be reversed. All the parts are then connected by welding. The spigots j may be formed on a ring k attached to the inner periphery of the rim, or this ring may be apertured at parts corresponding to the positions of the spokes. Studs or ferrules m secured to the rim i or ring k may be substituted for the integral spigots; or the spoke ends may be formed with shoulders n adapted to abut against the rim and hub. In another construction, each half of the rim and spokes, Fig. 9, or of the hub and spokes, may be stamped in one piece, the two halves being welded together at their adjacent edges after being placed in position to embrace the spigots on the hub or rim; or the halves may be connected first and the spigots pressed from the hub or rim into the free ends of the spokes.
