Abstract

19,800. Avery, W. & T., and Brown, A. W. Sept. 2. Testing balance of pulleys, fly-wheels, &c.- An apparatus for testing the balance of flywheels, crank-shafts, &c., together with the cooperating connecting-rods &c. of high-speed engines, comprises a pair of knife-edged sleeves or mandrels in which the shaft &c. to be tested is mounted, the mandrels being attached to, and forming the pivots of a frame carrying all the elements to be tested; the mass required to balance the frame is then determined by means of an indicating-arm and scale, balance-weights &c. The fly-wheel 7, Figs. 1 and 2, is attached to a spindle, which is mounted in hollow mandrels 5 having knife-edges 6, Fig. 4. The mandrels are in turn mounted in a frame 4, Fig. 3, previously balanced by means of an adjustable weight 20 traversed by a screw 19. The connecting-rods, pistons, &c. are suspended together from links 11 supported by knife-edges 8, 10 carried by the frame and adjusted to positions relative to the axis of the fly-wheel, crank-shaft, &c., corresponding to those occupied in the assembled engine. The frame is supported by the knife-edges 6 which are placed upon members 3 carried by the standards of a frame. The frame 4 is prevented from overbalancing by means of india-rubber stops 17, Fig. 1. The amount required to balance the elements is determined by an indicating-arm 15 and a fixed scale 14, or by weights attached to the frame.
