Abstract

19,213. Hedderwick, H. J. Aug. 25. Locking nuts.-A nut is locked by a resilient device which engages the base of the nut and the work, and also grips the bolt. The device comprises two rings or washers R, R', Fig. 1, with inclined contacting surfaces. Both rings are split and resilient, or the outer ring may be rigid. When compressed by the nut, the inner ring contracts on to the bolt. The rings may have interlocking-projections to prevent separation when removed from the bolt. The outer ring may be laminated, the sections being either loose or bound together. A third resilient or rigid ring may encircle the ring R. One or both rings may be of oval cross-section, the curved surfaces acting in the same manner as the inclined surfaces shown in Fig. 1. The two rings may be replaced by a coil of two turns, the outer of which slides over the inner. The rings may be made of sheet metal. The outer ring may constitute a rigid portion of the nut. Fig. 18<B> shows a modification in which the inner ring R<1> consists of a split corrugated cone, and is placed in a conical recess in the base of the nut.
