[Cognate Application, 6561/14.J Coating - machines. - A machine for coating earthenware and like plates, dishes, and other articles with glaze or the like comprises a tub b containing the coating-liquid and a rotating shaft c provided with radial arms f carrying adjustable sleeves g supporting pivoted tables 11 fitted with means for gripping the ware. A stack of inverted plates &c. is arranged in magazine form, with the lowest plate resting on one side on a shaft 2 on a fixed bracket O<2>, and on the other on a roller y and against a guard-plate y<2> both carried by a screwadjusted plate w. The lowest plate of the stack is released, as each table 11 comes beneath it, and falls on to supports 16 on the table, where it is gripped by spring-pressed arms 15 which are released on passing a projection 18 on the plate w. As the shaft c rotates, a horizontally movable spring-pressed friction board k engages axially adjustable pinions or pulleys i on the sleeves g and rotates the sleeves against the resistance of springs while the ware is passing through the coating-liquid. When the pulley passes beyond the board, the spring rotates the sleeve quickly in the opposite direction, thus removing the surplus glaze from the ware. The plates are released from the tables 11 by a stop 21 on the machine frame forcing back the gripping-devices. As the shaft c further rotates, the tables are moved about their pivots against the resistance of springs 13 and the ware passes over a rotating roller 22<a> on to a conveyer apron 23 leading to a receiving-conveyer 40 forming part of a drying-apparatus. The mechanism for feeding the plates to the tables 11 consists of an eccentric disk 24 of adjustable eccentricity driven through gearing 25 from the shaft c and carrying a strap 26 which oscillates the shaft 2 by means of a rod 27 and rack-andpinion gearing. During the movement of the shaft 2 in one direction, a recess 3 fitted with a spring 4 passes above a plate rim. On the movement being reversed, the rim is moved downwards until it rests against a fixed bar 8 and a pivoted arm 6 is rocked intermittently to release, the plate completely by a projecting bowl on the shaft 2. The eccentric 24 also drives the conveyer-apron 23 through a rod 30, rack-andpinion gearing and a free-wheel device mounted on the conveyer pulley shaft 32. The shaft 32 may instead be driven from the shaft c through belt gearing. The other conveyer pulley shaft is geared to a vertically adjustable shaft 37 driving frictionally a tubular shell 39 for equalizing the speed of discharge with the speed of the conveyer 40. The glazing-liquid is supplied through an opening at one side of the tub, and leaves by an opening on the opposite side, the height of the liquid being controlled by an adjustable slide. The liquid is agitated by a skeleton frame carried by arms 43 pivoted coaxially with the shaft c and oscillated by a double-armed lever fixed to the shaft c. The machine may be provided with means for gauging the size of the ware, previous to the coating operation, consisting of an arm q carried by a hand-operated screw r mounted on a graduated sleeve on the bracket o<2>.
