Abstract

18,133. Carter, J. E., and Wright, S. A. Aug. 9. Combined turning and boring machines.- Machines for boring and facing valves, pipes, &c. have two headstocks in line and one at right-angles. Each headstock is adjustable on the bed by a rack-and-pinion operated by ratchet hand-levers. The spindles of heads 2, 3 rotate in opposite directions and all the spindles are geared to a common drive at 5. The feedscrews of the rotary tool-heads are operated by gears in connexion with toothed sectors 17, 18 arranged to provide a quick return and mounted on slides controlled by hand-levers and eccentrics 21. The left-hand and centre spindles have inner spindles for boring, fed by screws driven by two-speed differential gearing 27 from the outer spindles. The rectangular shape of the rotary tool-heads permits the machine to be used on small diameters, the heads clearing one another similarly to teeth on meshing wheels.
