17,601. Drysdale, H. July 31. Packeting cigarettes in receptacles. - Relates to a machine for compressing and packing cigarettes into cases. The cigarettes are placed in a hopper c<3>, Fig. 3, from which they pass through a sliding frame d with a number of bars d<1> to ensure their parallelism, and fall between the partitions c<2> of a casing c and are laterally compressed by slides f. The movement of the slides f is controlled by springs f<1>, f<3> of different power, a vertical rod g being actuated to release the springs f<3> and to allow the springs f<1> to draw the slides inwards. A d u p l e x pusher h, Fig. 2, one part acting against each charge of five cigarettes, next expels the charges into cases x. The cross-head h<1> of the pusher is actuated by a link h<4> held against a cam by a spring h<9> and adjustable in respect thereto by means of a slot h<6> and adjustable link h<7>. The cigarettes pass through a tapered spring nozzle i, Figs. 2 and 6, on to which the empty case x has been thrust by fingers as it falls to the bottom of a hopper b. Pipes k, connected with an airexhausting apparatus, ensure that the mouths of the cases are fully open before being thrust on to the nozzle i. The filled packets are pushed on to an incline l and are carried up under a detent m<1> by a member l<2>, the various members being spring-controlled.
