Abstract

16,778. Baker, W. July 22. Breech actions, dropdown barrel. - Relates to drop - down guns having a bell - crank cocking-lever pivoted in the action - body and adapted to abut against the underside of the lump, in combination with a hammer pivoted co-axially with the cocking - lever, this lever carrying the firing- spring, which is stressed by the rocking of the lever when the gun is closed. The invention consists in providing the cocking-lever with a pivoted pin passing through or alongside the hammer, the firing-spring being mounted upon this pin. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the cocking-lever a and hammer d are mounted on the same pivot in the action-body. A rod e pivoted to the lever a passes through the hammer and has a head f between which and the hammer the firing-spring g is arranged. The lever a rests against the lump c on the barrel. The barrel is unlocked by rotating a lever 1, which causes a pin n, Fig. 4, to retract the locking-bolt i, in a recess of which is located a spring j which presses a pin k against the lever a. When the barrel is broken down, the spring j rotates the lever a backwards, and this presses the hammer backwards until its shoulder o engages the trigger p. On closing the gun, the block c presses down the arm h of the lever a and thereby stresses the firing-spring g. A safety lever q is forced into engagement with the trigger, when the barrel is unlocked, by a resilient rod t operated by the locking-bolt i, and is held in the engaged position by a spring s. The lever q may be manually rocked out of engagement with the trigger when the gun is closed by a push-piece r.
