Abstract

16,398. West, C. July 16. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates to projectiles provided with devices for igniting the gases of balloons, and consists mainly in the use of an igniter producing sparks or flame by the frictional contact of opposing parts. As shown in Fig. 1, pyrophoric rods d carried by the projectile a are pressed by springs e against a nose piece b, which is rotatably mounted on the projectile, and is provided with helical surfaces f; the rotation of the nosepiece relatively to the body part a during flight causes sparks to issue from the tips of the pyrophoric rods, and the rush of air through holes m helps to disperse the sparks outwards at j. A receptacle 2 may be provided containing a gas or inflammable vapour and adapted to be pierced open by the set-back of a punch 5 when the projectile is discharged ; the gas or vapour then escapes by ducts 7, mixes with air, and is ignited by the sparks. In modifications, the pyrophoric rods are carried by the nose instead of by the body of the projectile, the relative rotation of the spark-producing device is brought about by clock-work, by an internal vane-wheel driven by the air; or by vanes which extend out after discharge and serve also to tear the balloon, and the sparks are also used for igniting an explosive charge within the projectile.
