Abstract

15,966. Adams, F. C. July 10. Electric pens and pencils. - An artist's stippling-pen comprises an outer casing A, a frame B contacting with the interior of the casing and carrying at o n e end an electromagnet E and at the other end a slotted bush b in which the nib or like holder C oscillates from side to side, a spring arm D formed at one end as an armature d and carrying the nibholder at the other end, and a make-and-break device to cause the armature to be oscillated by the electro-magnet. The make-and-break device consists of a contact f, carried by a bracket f<1> inside the casing A, and a spring contact-strip d<1> mounted on the flexible arm D, which is secured to the frame B by a flexible bracket b<1>. An insulated arm H carrying a contact-screw h<1> and pivoted to the bush b forms a suitable switch by which the contact-screw h<1> may be brought into contact with the casing A to close an electric circuit. The leading wires from a battery are brought to two terminals provided on an insulated disk g at the rear end of the casing. One terminal is connected to the contact-screw h<1> and the other to one end of the winding of the electro-magnet, so that, the other end of the winding being connected to the contact f, the electric circuit, when the switch H is operated, is completed from one terminal through the winding of the electromagnet, the contact f, the strip d<1>, the bracket b<1>, the casing A, and switch H back to the other terminal. When the electro - magnet is energized, this circuit is broken owing to the attraction of the armature d, the arm D then springs back and again restores the circuit, and so on; the armature d and nib-holder C thus receiving the requisite oscillatory motion from side to side. According to the Provisional Specification, a holder for a short length of pencil may be arranged to slip over the nib-holder.
