My present invention, in its broad aspect, has reference to improvements in electric bells and chimes using alternating current, and is designed to be wired into an ordinary house current circuit, and is designed to eliminate the disadvantages of a direct current bell or chime which requires the use of batteries, is easily put out of order, and requires considerable attention. More particularly, it is my purpose to provide an alternating current bell or chime which does not require the use of a transformer, batteries, circuit breakers, or the like auxiliary apparatus, and which will not get out of order or become broken or deranged, and which is simple, sturdy and practical in operation. In eliminating the use of a transformer, I use a great many turns of wire in the core windings, and the magnet is of required strength to vibrate a unique and improved spring metal armature which carries the bell clapper or chime clapper or hammer and which bows as it oscillates to and from the bell or chime.
Other and equally important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and drawings, and it is pointed out that changes in form, size, shape, materials, and construction and arrangement of parts is permissible and within the purview of my broad inventive concept and the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention as applied to a bell, and a chime:

In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like or similar parts:
The numeral I designates the base which has a Wide end 2 tapering to a narrow end 3, and through the ends are holes 4 for attaching the bell or chime to a wall or the like. In describing my invention in detail, it is pointed out that all elements of the operating mechanism and the like are the same as applied to both bells and chimes except for the mounting and construction of the bell and the chime and the construction and mounting of the clapper. A pair of contact f posts 5 and 5 for introduction of alternating electric current are provided on the end 4 which are connected as at 'I with the core and magnet 8 and 9 Wound to approximate the functions of a transformer and mounted on the base in the casing Il). The casing has a front opening II through which the armature I2 extends, The armature has its end in the housing lixed to a bracket I3. The bracket has a base I4, a standard I5 and a top piece I5 with ears II clamping the end of the armature.
The armature is of a springy metal and is relatively long and inclines downwardly toward the end 3, and has xed to its free end a clapper I8. The clapper as shown in Figures l and 2 is a solid button. The bell I9 is mounted on a standard 20 which is inverted U-shaped, with the armature extending between the vertical parts thereof to dispose the clapper or button in engagement with the edge of the bell. In operation, the armature is oscillated to the electrical impulses and bows in the middle so that a sharp, clear sound is made by the bell when struck by the clapper.
In the form shown in Figures 3 and 4 the chime 2I is mounted on a standard 22 and through the coils 23 of which extends the armature. The clapper 24 is a strip of sheet metalribbed centrally and having end clips bent around and under the armature. A sustained and pleasant chime is given as the armature oscillates.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the operation and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is again emphasized that interpretation of its scope should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claim,
I claim:
An alternating current audible signal, comprising a base having contact posts at its end, a magnet and core on the base, an elongated spring metal armature extending over the magnet and core, a bracket having a base, a standard extending upwardly therefrom and formed integrally with said base, and a top piece extending for- Wardly of said standard in parallel relation to said base, said base being secured to said first said base and said top piece provided with ears for clamping engagement with and for supporting the end of the armature, a casing on the magnet and core, an audible signal comprising a spirally wound chime with the armature extending through the convolutions thereof, a bracket for supporting the signal on the first said base externally of the casing, a clapper formed of ribbed sheet metal having clamping ears at its end to engage the armature at the free end thereof in a. position to engage the audible signal, and the amature bridging over the core and magnet, is adapted to bow between its ends under the inuence of an electrical impulse through the contact posts on said base,
