Lighting systems; systems of discharging galvanic batteries.-The voltage impressed on a lamp or series of lamps is varied by varying the number of cells of a galvanic battery supplying them. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the positive poles of the end cells of a battery A are connected to the terminals E, F, G of four switches by means of leads B, C, D, while the negative lead K is connected through the lamps J to terminals H of the switches. The terminals E, F, G, H are connected to conducting segments of the switches, and the segments are adapted to be bridged by a movable arm M, the position of which varies the number of cells connected across the lamps. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, two positive leads C, D are taken from the battery and connected to the terminals F, G of the switches, while two negative leads B, K are taken from the other end of the battery and connected to the terminals E, 0 of the switches. - The terminals F, G, E, 0 are connected to conducting segments of the switches, and are adapted to be bridged by contacts M. M<1>, mounted on a rotatable arm, in order that the lamps J may be placed across the whole or various portions of the battery A.
