Abstract

15,069. Schneider, E. June 30. Oscillating-cylinder pumps; priming.-Relates to the supply of water to the motive fluid heater or generator of a torpedo, and consists in a special arrangement of priming and suction pipes for the feed-pump, and in an improved form of valve for controlling the supply of the water. As shown in Fig. 1, the upper part of the suction chamber of the pump his connected by a priming pipe o to the upper outside of the torpedo, the upper part of the pipe being directed rearwards ; and the lower part of the suction chamber is connected by a suction pipe j to the lower outside of the torpedo, the lower end of the pipe being directed forwards, and a non-return valve m and a sieve n being placed at its mouth. In a modification, the pipe j is connected to the upper part of the suction chamber, and the non-return valve is dispensed with. The pump h constitutes the front end of a Brotherhood engine g and comprises a suction chamber 1, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, a delivery chamber 2, and a number of pistons a worked by a common pair of cranks e, e' in rocking cylinders b which are secured to or formed in one with valve plugs i coacting with valve seats d. The delivery pipe k, Fig. 1, leads to the heater or generator r through a valve p, Fig. 5, which comprises a piston s pressed down by a spring t and by the pressure in the generator r to which the valve is connected by a pipe x ; a plug v is also provided to determine the amount of water to be fei to the generator r. Thus the water can only be fed to the generator when its pressure exceeds that in the generator by an amount determined by the spring t and, if the water pressure is excessive, overflow ports u are opened.
