Filaments, supports for.-An apparatus for sealing wires radially into glass stems, and preferably also for cutting them off and shaping the ends into hooks, spirals, or the like, is shown in two forms, that of Fig. 4 being suitable for thin elastic wires of metals such as iridium, platinum, molybdenum, and tungsten, and that of Fig. 9 for thicker wires of copper, nickel, or the like. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the wires a are held horizontally or slightly inclined by a ring of spring clips d, which carry supplyrolls g, and are movable radially towards and from a stop-piece e, upon which when the clips are in their inmost position, the fused end of a stem b is pressed down, forming a button, in which the ends of the wires are embedded either radially, or bent downwards as shown. When the clips d are moved outwards, the wires are unwound, and the ends are cut off and shaped by pairs of formers f, f<1>. A completed stem with its hooks is given a partial turn before being removed, to clear the machine, or a table may be turned instead. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the lower formers fare part of the clips d, and hold the wire a, which is cut off and shaped before it is inserted into the glass, as shown at the left hand. The clips d are shaped at the ends to embrace a mounted stem b in which a button is to be formed, without a stop-piece e. Moulding-pieces i, k, which surround the stem are lowered to shape the button, as shown at the right hand. In a further modification, to form a button at the end of a stem with an extension to be fused to a lamp-foot, a stop-piece e is used which has a corresponding recess, with moulding - pieces i, k.
