Abstract

14,257. Humphrey, A. A. June 19. [Cognate Application, 21,125/13.] Actuating pumps by motion of vehicles.-Comprises an auxiliary air-pump for self-propelled vehicles, in which one part of the pump is connected to the vehicle frame and the other to the axle so that the relative motion between the frame and the axle due to the flexure of the springs operates the pump. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the pump is fixed to the frame of the vehicle, and the piston-rod g, shown in Fig. 2, is actuated by a lever h which is pivoted on the axle and connected to the frame by a link k, or the pump cylinder may be connected to the axle and the piston-rod to the frame. The stroke of the pump may be varied by altering the point at which the lever is pivoted to the axle. In the form of pump shown in Fig. 3, the piston a works in an ordinary pump cylinder b which is, however, formed with a piston-head f working in a fixed cylinder c. The movement of the cylinder b is limited by an adjustable plate o'. Non-return valves l, m, d are provided. Under normal conditions, the cylinder b remains stationary, but when the piston a is moved in by an abnormal shock the cylinder b is also forced in, compressing air in a reservoir with which the valve d communicates. In a modified form of pump, there is only one cylinder, but a floating piston of two different diameters is employed, this piston being forced in when abnormal shocks are experienced. According to Provisional Specification 14,257/13, the pumps may be actuated by a longitudinal bar connecting two axles in such a manner as to make use of lateral vibrations.
